Which will be most effective at any given time is something of a judgement call, and in many cases will be a factor you need to ascertain on a day-to-day basis via trial and error
Variations on the basic design include belts or rubber spheres, which exert pressure on top of the netting creating more friction with the lower drum and the netting making it easier to haul the net
Make sure to pack some rubber gloves if using coloured brines
